Oh what a night… On Saturday May 2nd, 2009, I had the pleasure of hosting the Switch Hitter’s Ball at the enormous “Arena” venue in Hollywood. It was a fundraiser for The Greater Los Angeles (Gay) Softball Association and The Life Group LA HIV/AIDS supportive group.
Softball players from each team performed in elaborate camp/comedy drag routines, competing for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place as judged by a panel of celebrity judges including local drag diva Miss Barbie Q, top selling singer Erin Hamilton (with whom I got to have dinner afterward) and several other amazing people.
As the flyer said, “MC-ing the event in all her Glam … Calpernia Addams! A special singing performance by the chart topping Diva herself… Erin Hamilton singing her two number one hits of 2009!” I performed “Stunning” at the beginning of the night, then MC’d for the rest of the night.
Arena on Santa Monica Blvd is HUUUGE. Absolutely enormous inside. And it was PACKED with rowdy gay baseball fans (who knew!), so of course I had a great time. It was hot as Hell, so I stayed in my opening number outfit most of the night. Unbeknownst to me, BARRY WILLIAMS was in the audience, whom you may know as Greg Brady, resulting in the curious circumstance of me dancing half-nude in a dominatrix outfit in front of one of my childhood crushes. “The Brady Bunch” was a serious source of fantasy for me: a large, uncomplicated and fun family full of support for each other. I identified most with Jan, and found Christopher Knight (Peter) the cutest, but Barry Williams was definitely the hottest. LOL, I know, I’m an idiot. RuPaul was there, too, along with several other really cool people that I knew.
Afterward, I jetted over to the World of Wonder Gallery showing of Lenora Claire‘s Bettie Page: Heaven Bound art opening, featuring legends such as artist Olivia, Cassandra Peterson (Elvira), Pandora Peaks, Dita Von Teese and lots of Cal-Pals like Selene Luna, Squeaky Blonde and more. Exhausting day, but fun!
