* I get a lot of mail. “Soldier’s Girl” has been playing again on Showtime, so recently I’ve gotten a large run of wonderful notes from all kinds of people, children, grandmas, politicians and scientists. Today I got a really nice note from a nameless heterosexual, married soldier currently in Iraq, and I’m going to write them back, but I had to share an interesting little bit added onto the end of the letter:

You’d never believe how I came across your film- right here in Iraq, from a local dvd vendor, on an Army forward operating base! And I’m not the only one with a copy, several troops have it!

* It really blew my mind to think of little Iraqi blackmarket vendors pulling pirated versions of “Soldier’s Girl” out of their sleeves, much less thinking of soldiers out there watching the movie in the midst of a war! The work they did on that movie is really, really having an effect on the world, I think. Little by little, peoples’ minds and hearts are being opened by things like this. Yay!
