Calpernia to Judge Premiere California EOY Pageant
Wow! I have been given the fabulous honor of being one of the celebrity judges for the first California Entertainer of the Year pageant on January 12th, 2010!!! The EOY (Entertainer of the Year) pageant system is for competitive drag entertainers/transsexual showgirls, with a focus on the Talent and “Creative” Eveningwear portions of the competition. In the past, girls have spent many thousands of dollars on choreographed talent numbers, custom made costumes, jewelry, props and evenwear. Back in my day, the winner of the National Entertainer of the Year competition was awarded $10,000 and a new car, a stunning crown and jewelry set and a year’s worth of guaranteed bookings representing the crown. This year, the winner of California EOY will get $10,000 in cash and prizes!
During my early career as a showgirl, I won Nashville Entertainer of the Year, Tennessee Entertainer of the Year and placed in the top ten of Nationals on my first year.
The event will be held at the legendary House of Blues on the even more legendary Sunset Strip in Hollywood, and will feature seven celebrity judges (I can’t wait to tell you who I’ll be judging with! COOL COOL PEOPLE!) including Shanna Moakler (who helped bring down the evil Carrie Prejean). It is sponsored by Odyssey Magazine, OUT Magazine, MAC Cosmetics and other well known sponsors will be announced shortly. Beneficiaries of this year’s pageant are The Matthew Shepard Foundation and the NoH8 Campaign.
In this our inaugural year, the competition will be held at the world famous House of Blues on the legendary Sunset Strip. We are proud to be awarding one of the largest prize packages to female illusionists in the world, topping out at $10,000 in cash and prizes to this year’s Miss California Entertainer of the Year. Our Mr. California Entertainer of the Year will also receive an impressive prize package of $2,500 in cash and prizes.
We are also excited to have partnered with both the Matthew Shepard Foundation as well as the NOH8 Campaign in hopes of raising a significant amount of money in the fight against hate and discrimination. There will be a silent auction preceding the night’s competition with 100% of the proceeds benefiting the Matthew Shepard Foundation. There will also be a limited edition NOH8 poster featuring all of our contestants with proceeds benefitting the NOH8 Campaign. These two charities really need our support, and we at California EOY are working hard to do the most that we can for our community.
This year we will be providing airfare and accommodations for both our winner and the first runner-up in the “Miss” category and the winner in the “Mr.” category to represent California EOY and compete for the national title in Louisville, Kentucky, this July.

Everyone at Planet Q TV and Click Click Expose wishes all the contestants good luck at this year's California EOY. It's going to be exciting!! We got to interview Calpernia last year as part of our "Pageant Soup Podcast Show" so we are so happy that you are particpating as a judge. Have fun.

Why aren’t you in this contest instead of judging it? While you may share my belief that there is no “best” only the ever-present push to improve, having come so close the first time around it seems to be unfinished business for you not to have won a prestigious title and wearing a glittering crown. Maybe next year, eh? Meanwhile, HAPPY NEW YEAR!

No, hon, pageants are a good way to make one’s name in the drag world, but I feel like I’ve already done that in other ways with my media work, music and activism. I quit the “drag” circuit many years ago. What I do nowadays is certainly similar to drag… I put on heavy makeup, wigs and costumes to perform for (mostly) gay boys. But I like to think that I’m doing it in the same way as Cher, Madonna, Bette Midler and other women entertainers. When it all washes off in the shower, I’m still a woman and a drag pageant is no place for a woman to compete.

YOU were amazing last night as a judge for California EOY. You are poised and articulate and I totally have a new sense of who you are, nothing like I got from your reality show (oops, sorry, I just thought that show didn't portray you are a real person, seemed like an act) But thank you for making me a fan
