The first Los Angeles run of the Jer Ber Jones/Calpernia Addams live show “Transfixed” closed on Tuesday, and WOW what a fun time! As many Cal-pals know, the inimitable Jer Ber Jones creates a monthly themed cabaret called “Telekinesis” at Casita Del Campo’s Cavern Club Theatre. I’ve performed several times with a large group of wonderful people there… as a saucy nightclub singer performing “Next!”, as a Mormon sister-wife performing “Ode to Billy Joe”… but this time, Jer Ber and I concentrated it down to just the two of us and wrote “Transfixed”, in which we play two variety show hosts (a la Donnie & Marie, Sonny & Cher) in an extremely dysfunctional 20-year-long relationship forged when I conned Jer Ber into donating one of her kidneys to me. Hey, it could happen…
“Transfixed” is a story about two entertainers who star in a Donnie-and-Marie/Sonny-and-Cher style TV variety show in the mid-70′s/80′s, starring an alternate-universe Calpernia Addams and Jer Ber Jones. Cruel and wheedling Calpernia is constantly browbeating weak and innocent Jer Ber in their shared dressing room while a bizarre collection of TV commercials play between their on-stage showstoppers. What is Calpernia’s secret? When will Jer Ber finally break down under her constant abuse? Heh heh!
We open and close the show in matching Bob Mackie costumes (formerly worn by Liza’s dancers! Thanks Momma and EC2!), and we perform some of our “greatest hits” alongside new songs and a few covers, as well. This first Los Angeles run included in the audience a slew of LA incredibles such as Alec Mapa, Selene Luna, Mario Diaz, Lou Becker, Krista Benson and more. I can’t wait to take it to San Francisco this coming week and blow them away with some freeky deeky fun!
One of my new songs in this show is a cover of XTC’s classic and blasphemous “Dear God”, now updated with beats and live piano by DJ Branwen Somatik! I orchestarted it as a backup track for my live performance, but I’ve laid down a quick 1st-take vocal track on top of the mix to give a little preview. I’ll be releasing the final version as soon as I can get a good vocal track laid down on top of it. Branwen is an awesome DJ and musician from Wales, you should check out some of her music, including her famous sensation “Zor”: DJ Branwen Somatik
