Christmas 2003

December 25th, 2003

* Well, another year has come and gone. I have only written a few entries this month… I’ve been so very busy with our production of “The Vagina Monologues” and the generalities of day to day business.

* This has been my second set of holidays home alone… when I moved to LA last year, my roommate went home for the holidays. I spent Christmas and New Years in an apartment with no furniture but my bed and zero food. Things are a lot different now… I live in a nice place and have a kitchen full of too much food. But home alone again… sigh! I have friends here, but I just kinda prefer a quiet house and my own thoughts. So much happened this year! There are several things just in this one year that I desperately wish I could go back and do differently. I guess it just goes to show that life is like that…

* Sometimes I see my past as a long hallway stretching back three decades… If I take a moment to stop and look behind, it’s staggering to see all the disparate elements layered upon each other, receding back into the dark. It’s hard to believe that the little kid in plaid pants and a bowl-cut, the folk-violinist, the soldier, the showgirl, are all the same person. There are a million moments I wish were different, but all of the situations and choices have added up into this person, this moment, right here in front of a keyboard. In an empty house. On Christmas night.

* I was lucky enough to get a Chirstmas present or two this year. You may remember that last year my only Christmas gift was a Hoberman Sphere from my Mom (which came in January, I believe). This year Showtime sent me a beautiful box containing a white blanket made of super soft Chenille. Andrea gave me a very sweet card and gift. And dear Shay sent me the H.P. Lovecraft book I had on my Amazon Wishlist there to the left. So sweet! Last year I also go a beautiful dress from Patty and camera from Janet. Debbie has been a big help for things coming up in January. And there have been so many people who’ve helped out the work we do with our many websites… so even though I didn’t have the traditional family thing, I was very lucky this last 12 months.

* Very appropo of California, “Terminator I” is playing over and over on television tonight. I had always admired the tough soldier-chick incarnation of Linda Hamilton in part II, but had never seen this first one. I was surprised to see that everything about her was different… her voice was so much higher it sounded like she was on helium. She had terrible hair and was so soft and sweet… Sarah Connor underwent quite a transformation herself. So here is my Christmas lesson for 2003… The Terminator Part One. Hmm…

Calpernia, I feel very fortunate to have been able to give you something material this past year. It’s always nice to receive as well as give; I prefer giving. However, the words we’ve all shared with you, I think, is the biggest gift of all. You are very fortunate in many ways mostly because of how many people care about you. Many of us may not know you on a personal level but we are grateful that you share so much of your life with us and that is a gift for us because not many people would allow perfect strangers to share such intimate details.

We all transform in one way or another as each year passes and we learn from all our experiences. Don’t look back at past events and what you would have done to change them. Look forward to another year of wonderful potential and know that even though you may be alone at times, you are always in our thoughts.

I always felt that the Sarah Conner in Termanator 2 was molded after Sigourney Weaver in Aliens. I LOVE the Alien films, and exspecially love Sigourney in them. Give either Aliens or Alien3 another look and you’ll see the similarities.
