Girls who want to be boys…

* Just read an interesting bit in a UK news source… it seems in Iran, where women are not allowed to go out in public alone and must wear those heavy covering garmets, some rebel girls are getting short haircuts and posing as boys. This isn’t done lightly… in their culture, a woman’s long hair is her crowning glory. Usually they’ve been growing it out since childhood, and cutting it off is a big time commitment to their ideals. So these women shave their heads down to male standards and get into “male drag” in a country where flaunting the sexual roles can be punishable by prison or even stoning. The barber who was cutting their hair has been arrested, and I’m sure things are not going well for him. Just think… right this second he is sitting in a prison cell. Right now. For transgressing a gender boundary.
* Not to say they are transgendered. Most likely just wanting more freedom in a country where men tend to hold all the cards. But interesting nonetheless. The article is here . Aren’t we lucky we can dress and be the way we want? Sure, we have our hurdles here, but it’s inspiring to see other gender pioneers making their lives happen, despite the danger and cost.
