* You are now reading the diary entry of the newest official member of the Screen Actors Guild! Yes, that’s right, I am now a member of SAG, thanks to my role as a principal in “Transamerica”. As any of you know who are actors, getting into SAG is one of the first major challenges an actor faces when transitioning into making a living from their beloved craft. The system is complex and based on old rules and situations that were formed long before anyone had any idea of what the film industry would become in professional terms. The basic problem is, you can’t get work unless you’re in SAG, and you can’t get into SAG unless you work. The struggle is to find a way around that Catch-22, but for me that hurdle is past!

* Today I went to the studio lot for my costume fitting for “Monster in Law”. I’m going to play a dignitary at a very high class party, so once I had gotten onto the lot and walked down the rows of GIANT hangar-sized studio buildings, I popped into wardrobe and joined several other models and actresses awaiting their fittings. When I walked in, the desk guy didn’t even blink as he said, “You’re one of the models with (some agency)?” I said, “No, I’m an independant.”

* There were racks and racks of gorgeous gowns and party clothes. A cute woman with a gorgeous French name took my measurements and then we waded into the gowns to select something for me. Our first choices were a lilac Oscar De La Renta and a deep vermillion strapless Givenchy. The lilac gown wouldn’t go over my hips, but once I slipped on the red gown, I knew it would be the one. The photo on the left is a picture I found online that looks very similar, but you’ll just have to wait to see the real thing. It was simple, elegant and yet dramatic, the deep color making my skin look an even paler white and my hair a darker black. But nonetheless we slipped it off to go try on other gowns, just to be sure.

* There were several other models in the dressing area, and every single one of them was Barbie doll blonde and very skinny. I thought it was weird that all of them looked the same, but I’m sure there must be some other models who had already come in on another day. Each one was definitely beautiful, but as I looked at them I was glad that I was more Snow White than Cinderella looking. I have just never felt like a blonde. And in California, there are so many of them! The cool thing was, I noticed the girl closest to me wore the same shoe size as I did, and most everyone was around my height, so I didn’t feel quite as giant-sized as usual. You know, I wasn’t even nervous or anything. Not that I thought I’m perfect and above criticism… I think I’m just getting to a place where I know who I am and what I am, flaws and features and all. Not to say I won’t be nervous in some future situation, but a costume fitting is no longer in the category of “intimidating”.

* None of the other dresses looked as good, so we decided on the red one and took my picture in it. The French lady asked me if the (somewhat worn) shoes were comfortable, and said if not, they would go buy me some new ones. They felt fine to me, so I said nevermind. I suppose I should have made them buy me some new high-quality shoes, but I didn’t want to be a leach and try to bilk them out of some props. I know, I know, I’m an idiot…

* Another day in Hollywood…
