* The Sundance website has its page up about Soldier’s Girl. They spelled Addams wrong, but it’s a great writeup. Check it out HERE. (You have to click on the words Soldier’s Girl)
* Here is the website of the man who composed the movie’s soundtrack. The music is absolutely gorgeous: Jan kaczmarek.

Dear Cali,

How do you feel about your portrayal in the film and the casting of Lee Pace? This is a bit off the subject of your story, but is relevant when the object is to present a transsexual woman as something other than a female impersonator.

The film that I cited in the General Discussion (see THELMA: http://www.calpernia.com//ubbthreads/showthreaded.php?Cat=&Board=general&Number=236&page=0&view=collapsed&sb=5&o;=&vc=1) had a pre-op transsexual woman playing the appropriate role in the title character.

This choice of actors for the role of TS women in film seems to be traditionally cast with a suitably good looking man. This is true for roles going back to the truly awful "Christine Jorgensen Story" up to Brad Dorff as Candy Darling in 'I SHOT ANDY WARHOL'.

There ARE transsexual actresses somewhere in America to cast aren't there? Certainly there is no lack of excellent women who perform on stage nightly who also possess acting ability.

Having met you last Sunday, I can attest to your total, unclockable female persona. Did you help Lee in his depiction of you while on the set? I just hope he does you justice in 'being' Calpernia in that time and place.

Best of Luck at the Festival next month,

A.A.

Calpernia, I just went to the sundance website and It looks great. The people who worked on this film are grade A. Although I havent seen the film, Im pretty sure It will recieve attention for Emmy and Golden Globe possible nomination. Talk about exposure potential, even though that's not the reason the movie was made. Can't wait to see it, but in the meantime.......

MERRY CHRISTMAS

* Hi all! "A" brings up some good points and questions. I always felt annoyance, too, when I saw roles portraying TS women played by men. There are a few factors that make this happen, though, as I have learned:
Possible Reason 1. Movies cost millions of dollars to make, so when someone (in this case, Doro Bachrach & Linda Gottlieb) want to get a movie made about something they find interesting, they have to go to a studio and ask for the money. The studio is only going to come off of a few million dollars if they think they're going to make it back somehow. They are selling a product (the movie) to Joe & Jane Blow, and Joe & Jane Blow are kind of dumb and usually only pay to see names they already recognize. Thus Stephen Dorff ends up playing Candy Darling. Patrick Swayze ends up as Vida Boheme. Etc etc. Of course, there are tons of us who are willing to risk our movie-ticket-dollars on unknown names. We're the smart, cool ones who like independent films and unusual stuff. But we are a minority.

Possible Reason 2. In a smaller budget or indie film, they can risk not having a major name, but then they have to fall back on (gasp!) talent. So they hold auditions, and probably a lot of TS women audition in addition to a lot more men. But TS women, as a demographic, tend to have less money and fewer educational opportunities. We spend the first half of our life (or more) just coming to terms with who we are, so we tend to find ourselves playing catch-up at 30 (like me) with actors who have been studying and performing since they were 8. So we go in, look cute, and get upstaged by someone who knows the acting business better. This isn't their fault. It’s a business and we're in it to win. A big part of the solution is for TS actresses to get better at their craft through professional training. But you cant deny that there is also a lot of bias against us still... It's risky to compare any situation to that of African Americans, but I personally think it's similar to the problems Black actresses faced in early Hollywood. It was difficult to get the training, and when they did have talent and training, they were forced to play maids and tap-dancers, just as we are forced to play prostitutes, psychos and punch-lines. Slowly but surely movies like Soldier's Girl will help erode those negative images, even though a TS is not in the title role.
But I personally plan to get out here in Hollywood and see what I can do as an actress and performer, in my own small way... We shall see on that. In terms of this movie, I admit when I first heard a man was playing me, I was unhappy about it. But when I met Lee, I was confident that he was the person for the role. He looked like me back in 1999: Very early on in my transition. He was sweet and gentle and shy, with a devilish streak and real strength behind the softness. Plus he is a Julliard graduate, and I really got the sense that he could bring the role to life and make people care about the character he was portraying.

In a perfect world, there would have been some amazing, cool, beautiful TS woman to play me. Or even a female... They were actually talking to Ashley Judd, which would have been super flattering. But in the world we live in, Lee was the best choice and I love him personally and professionally. I can't wait for everyone to see the magic between him and Troy onscreen. It makes me cry just to look at the picture sometimes. I hope everyone embraces Lee's performance, but I also hope the community can support me and other TS actresses in moving the world towards a place where we play ourselves in most cases. Let me know what you think!

* Butterfly: No they didn't change any names of the principal characters. Most of the supporting characters are composites or "inspired-by" charcters, though. For example, there is a performer named "Typhoon", and you may remember the Connection's own "Hurricaine" was working there at the time. Hmm... =) Also the club is called "Visions", to avoid legal stuff. I don't mind... the Kill-nection was one of the cruelest places I've ever worked. When Barry died the owners never sent a card or anything other than to have a message relayed saying "Don't bring those news cameras in the club. Bad publicity." As if I was controlling the news...
