Nino de la Tierra, the Devil’s Baby

The Original Post: My Niño de la Tierra Story
Last night, as I was leaving the house I saw something I had just stepped over on the porch that filled me with primal revulsion… a huge, glistening bug with muscles and the face of a fetus, blocking my return path like some kind of evil monster. Did I mention that it was HUGE!?!
* I was horrified, and too afraid of it to try to cross back over it into the house, so I went around the side to get in. I came back out onto the front porch and sluiced it with poison to no effect… it just seemed to drink it up and rub it more onto itself to mock me. I called Andrea to come and look at it, and she was equally horrified, but brave enough to try to send it back to Hell where it came from. Normally, she won’t hurt bugs and even carries spiders outside rather than smashing them, but this creature was so big, muscular and evil looking that I insisted. Even after several hard blows with a blunt wooden object, it was still totally alive! Andrea finally stunned it enough that it could be relocated to another yard (heh heh). I know it’s mean to hit bugs, but this creature awakened an ancient loathing embedded deep in my DNA from prehistoric times and I had to obey.
* In researching on the web, Andrea discovered that it is called a Jeruselum Cricket (even though it’s not a cricket), a Potato Bug (even though it doesn’t eat potatoes), a Niño de la Tierra, a Cara de Niño, and all kinds of names relating to the Devil (really). It is related to those giant Camel Spiders that you may have seen from Iraq. Ahhhhhh!
* I think it’s gone now, and I am safe, but as everyone who has ever met one says, I feel like I will probably be scarred for life.

I just saw my first one this year on a woodpile out in my friend’s horse pasture. They are quite large… I was fascinated. So sad I didn’t have a camera to get a shot of it.

I like bugs what can I say… I especially like like the Praying Mantis. The only thing that raises the hair on my arms a little is a black widow because I was bitten as a child but if they aren’t in the house I just leave them alone… also I don’t like Yellow Jackets they can sting and sting!… Bees are really docile atleast the normal ones unless you stomp on their hive or something. OH and maggots are just knarly, but worms are cool! I should have been an entomologist.

i got bit by one of those on a commercial shoot in the desert. some of them were cut in half by the trucks and kept on going. fun in the dark.

i saw one last week, and believe me, i was so full of enthusiasm because my friends are always talking about it so i really wanted to see one of those.
i love the, specially their heads because they look so adorable and cute. my mom says that they’re just bugs, but i told her, “mom, they are not just bugs because their face looks like a real baby” but she just answered me that i was goiing to dream with them because i looked like if i was in love with them… and i told her “I WISH.”

We used to have them at my house when I was a little kid! They were terrifying and I grew up fearing spiders… Its now going away, though, And I havent seen one in over 10 years… I actually think they’re pretty cool now!! altough kind of creepy bc they do sort of look like a fetus!

Please, if anybody out there knows whether or not the bite/sting of the devil’s child is poisonous/deadly, I urge you to let me know ASAP. Teachers and students alike are anxious dto find out as we are in a classroom that is close to a vacan grassy field and we found one of those creatures in the classroom. We must find out of the dangers,if any, of this creatures. I sincerely appreciate anybody’s reply; right now?

I was bit by one once. I was typing on my computer, put my hands on my lap, felt something gripping my thumb with tiny hands and when I looked I saw and felt it bite me. It's big jaws cracked my skin pretty easily. I shook it off in shock and never saw where it landed. I didn't get sick but was scared that I might see one again.

A potato Bug? WOW!! I haven't seen one of those since I left Connecticut way back in 1980 something. How big did you say it was? Maybe it only appeared to be really big to scare the living S*** out of you and your friends. Anyway I don't remember if they are poisonous or not, but they are scarey enough to be left alone when in the wild. Take it from a Conn. Yankee now living in L. A.
