* OMG yesterday I didn’t get to make my Chess Pie because I wrecked, so I made it today, along with some fresh whipped cream for topping. Chess Pie is a Southern classic custard pie, especially good with black coffee or milk. Mine isn’t as good as Mom’s, but it’s still pretty good.

Yummy. . . chess pie!!! Have you ever heard the story of how Chess Pie got it’s name?
During the civil war (when times were tough and people couldn’t afford such luxeries as berries, spices, chocolate, etc), the cooks made pies as best as they could with what little ingredients they had. Upon asking the servants what this delicious new pie was called, with a flip of the wrist their reply was, “Oh! It’s chess pie!” (which, when translated for those not brought up in the south means, “Oh! It’s just pie!”
