USA Today interview with Felicity Huffman, Andrea and Calpernia

Sorry, but I think it sucks that they could not find, anywhere on this planet, a real trassexual to play that role. While Cal and Andrea show great courage by still contributing to the production, those producers in Hollywood need to stop exploiting the pain endured by the transgendered and start actually employing the TS folks in the big dollar positions in their production. Why not have the big name female starlet in the role that will earn her a “Best Supporting Actress” award while the lead role is filled by someone who has really lived the life. BTW, that crapola about how Felicity’s eating disorder allowed her to relate to the pain of being a transsexual….Puhleeese!

So, as in all civil rights struggles, sometimes victory over bigotry comes in increments. At least getting the subject of being transgendered out of the hands of the Jerry Springers and in a more respectful venue, is a step in the right direction; but a tiny step. Next time, Hollywood, let’s see a SOAP with several TS people in leading roles. Let’s see full length movies, both in theaters and on DVD that show TS girls in lead roles, where their lives are shown, as in reality, fully integrated in the daily drama that we all face at work at home and at play. Let’s see a series of films where society will be taught that a positive outcome CAN be achieved where transgendered people are treated with the same respect and kindness that we reserve for our best friends.
